Prep School

Environment

At approximately three years of age as your child’s preparation for Primary School continues our curriculum’s emphasis on pre-writing, pre-reading, and maths skills is enhanced. Our purpose-built facilities which include a separate art/creativity and science room, our Extension Classroom and Discovery Room. This encourages a “Love of Learning” and fosters an enquiring mind.

In our Discovery Room we offer children opportunities to enhance their exploration and learning whilst scaffolding the cognitive skills and development gained from using the Montessori materials. We focus on “Discovery” of the world, as children and teachers explore topics of interest and world events.

Our Extended Day Classroom is a rich, fun, collaborative and social environment for children who are ready for all their pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-maths skills and abilities to culminate. There is a focus on more teacher directed interaction and a core emphasis on the preparation for primary school including sharing, leadership and responsibility.

Transition

For new children, we encourage 3 settling visits, approximately 2 weeks before your child’s start date to ensure a smooth and settled transition for both you and your child.
Children transitioning from our Junior School will have regular accompanied visits to get familiar with their new environment and meet their new friends, ensuring this is a positive step in their learning journey. Our Transition Policy is available by asking a member of the team.

School Readiness

We also believe in building a foundation for children to transition to school as confident, capable learners. We encourage your child to dress themselves independently, pack and unpack their own bags, go to the toilet on their own, wash their hands, sit on the mat, listen and develop social skills and confidence within large groups.

Kowhai Group

This group provides an opportinuty for children 3.5 years to gain key skills which will support their further learning and develop their current skills. This allows children  to develop confidence and independence. There is an emphasis on extending their current skills and learning to be part of a small group with a teacher.  This group prepares the children for transition to the Kahikatea Room. All children who are 3.5 years will be invited into the Kowhai group for three sessions a week.

Nutrition

Our talented chef creates healthy and well-balanced meals, providing the nutrition and energy our preschoolers need for all aspects of their growth and development.

Communication

As well as daily face-to-face catch ups about your child’s day at drop off and pick up time, we use Storypark to share photos, videos and audio of your child’s development so you never miss out on those special moments.  Storypark also offer a handy mobile app so can have updates right to your smartphone.
